Engage them in conversation -
When you ask their name, where they live, and why they are not in a “shelter” you demonstrate concern. These children have been rejected so often in their lives. Don’t tell them to “Push off” or “leave me alone”, don’t swear at them or revile them; it’s the best way to elicit aggression. Its not productive for them to engage in conversation, they are trying to make money, not friends. They don’t want to chat! They’ll quickly leave you and move on.
• If you give money – and of that’s your choice – you need to know that there are basically two kinds of children who beg. There are the children who live on the street who may use their money for food, but who are more likely to use it for drugs or glue. Then there are children who come into the streets on a daily basis to beg in order to supplement their families’ income. We call them “day time strollers”.

• Rather give food than money. However access to food is not a major problem as there are many sources of food for the homeless in Cape Town.
• If you want to help rather donate money to one of the organizations working with street children than give it directly to the child and risk that he will spend the money on drugs or glue.
